Montenegro is a small, mountainous state in south-west Balkans and borders Croatia. The National Park covers 40,000 ha and is one of the largest lakes in Europe, containing 40 different kinds of fish. Bordered to the east by Albania the lake is encircled on three sides by the Montenegrin mountains. The national park is one of the largest bird reserves in Europe. Terrain ranges from high mountains in the northern part of the country, through karst segments in the central and western parts, to a narrow coastal plain. The coastal plain disappears completely in the north, where Mount Lovćen and other mountain ranges plunge abruptly into the inlet of the Gulf of Kotor. The coastal region is noted for active seismicity.
